Looking for a passive PJ set for my squier. Bonus points if it has enclosed covers a la EMGs. Not looking for a vintage sound, but also not into bright modern sound. Something in the middle.

With expose poles, thinking of: EMG Geezers, Bartolini B-axis (these are interesting), Fender Yosemite, not sure which from Aguilar, SD, Dimarzio, ETC
With enclosed covers (look cool): EMG PJ, Aguilar DCB, Bartolini Classic and Original.

What do you all think?

Side question: how are the enclosed cover ones setup, considering i always measure from the poles?

If you like that covered look without exposed poles, maybe check out Lace Man O' War pickups. I haven't played them myself, but I've spotted several raves about them from our pals around here.

Wilde P46/J45. Their holiday sets are on sale now: Holiday Set P/J Bass

If you want a closed cover set, I believe they will do that for you if you send them empty pickup covers/shells.

Hard to say where vintage ends and modern starts tho… you’ll have to do your own homework. on your list, I think most if not all of the exposed piece models are more on the vintage/old school side… Except maybe B-Axis? Also, while DiMarzio was “modern” in the 70s and 80s, I’d consider that old school now…

I’d put a couple others on your radar: Delano, Villex (if you can find them).

As far as setup goes, just use your ear.

I tried the DCBs, ended up selling them. I thought they were a bit muddy. YMMV, of course, but check out YT demos before deciding.

@sikamikanico is right about DiMarzio, but maybe Model J with black poles would give you a look you like?
