Possible Issues with Verellen Meatsmoke?

EDIT: I have contacted Ben Verellen and am waiting on a response. I’ll post updates here for other folks who may encounter this issue in the future. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

I bought the Verellen Meatsmoke Dual Channel Preamp last year after salivating watching numerous videos. I'm by no means a pro and just noodle around on my own or with some friends. For whatever reason though, and this could be my own ignorance, the boost channel seems to be super flubby when it gets past 1/4 gain (9 o'clock) and not as tight as I've heard in various videos. I have the stock JJ tube in there now, but tried a Golden Lion and had the same issue (actually it was worse then).

The below track is a quick sample of what it sounds like with the clean channel, 1/4 gain, 1/2 gain, and full gain.

The flub at the beginning is me digging in too hard and being too lazy to re-record it :)

This very well could be me just not understanding something but it just seems like there may be an issue with the pedal, at least with that channel. The clean channel sounds awesome to me, and this only happens when that is on + the boost.

Does anyone have ideas on what's going on? Is it worth contacting Verellen or am I just a dope who doesn't know how to tame this beast?

Ben responded very quickly and suggested trying a few other configs and settings. I was able to get the best sound by pushing it through the input on my amp and going DI out from there. I still think it breaks up a little too much/too fast so I’m going to experiment with some different tube options.

There was a noticeable difference in using a pick vs fingerstyle in that it seems to sound a lot better with a pick as the attack is much more precise and not flubby.

Good experience with Ben for sure and I’m eager to see if I can get the pedal to do what I was hoping for with some different tubes.
