Possible NBD - should I buy a cheap 7-string bass?

So, I was surfing the interwebs, looking at new and interesting stuff. Thus, I came over the brand new Ibanez 7-string bass. And, interesting as it looks, it is too much money for something that I REALLY don't need at the moment. But of course, GAS being in the driver seat here, I continued searching for 7-string basses, and came over the Harley Benton BZ-7000 NT 7-string. It is almost too cheap, at only $359 plus tax over at Thomann. However, the reviews seem pretty damned good for such a cheap bass, and while I certainly do NOT need it, it could be fun, and perhaps inspiring in the songwriting process that one of my bands is currently in for our new album.

So, should I take the plunge? Or is it just waisted money and disappointment waiting to happen?

A little context: I play mainly somewhat technical death metal, and my most used instruments are various Warwick Thumb basses, 5 string fretted and fretless.

Thanks for your wisdom, TB!

If you wan't to dabble in the 7 string world, I think it will be difficult anything that comes close to the HB for the price. It is possible that a QC issue could get overlooked, but they will happily replace or refund if it is.

Here are a few demos in case you haven't seen them:

Eyvindwa,

So , after a year, how do you like your Harley Benton 7-string? I'm looking to add a 7-string and am planning on ordering one soon.

Hi @Rojd

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it. The quality was high above what I expected from such a cheap bass.

Here is a picture of it from my Instagram account:

With that said, I haven't really been using it all that much. As I wrote in my initial post, I don't have much use for a 7 string bass, so any action it has seen has been noodling at home, so YMMV. However, for that purpose, it is a lot of fun :)

Ok, very cool. That's good you're happy with it. From everything I've read, people are pleased with the quality of the bass for the price. I'm sure it's not perfect, but you're not buying a boutique custom instrument.

I would use it for playing around and having fun at home, as I'm not in a band and don't play in public. It would suit my purposes well.

How was the packaging coming from Germany to you in Norway? It clearly arrived safe.

Yeah, it arrived safely, no problems with that. To be honest, I don't remember the specifics of the packaging; I guess that means that it was unremarkable - neither good nor bad.

Ok, well that's cool. Good enough for me. I don't really order things long distance from another part of the world, so I was just wondering.
