Preamp makes signal hot?

I expect this question will demonstrate how limited my knowledge is.
When using a passive bass, does adding a preamp in the signal chain (bass/preamp/input to combo amp) make the signal hotter i.e., more like an active bass than a passive one? If there's a pad switch for active basses, in the scenario above, should it be engaged?
I'm interested and trying to learn as much as I can about all things bass. TB is a great resource for that. Thanks

Think of an Active Bass as a Passive with a pre-amp pedal built into it, so I guess the answer is "Yes" - the pre-amp/pedal may boost/cut your signal. Try that switch both ways to see which you prefer.... ;)

Cheers,
