Preamp short? Kinda long post

So I had an interesting morning. I have new to me 2006 Lakland 5501 that I have had for a couple of weeks and I have logged 20-25 hours on including two church sevices without issue. This morning when I plugged in to practice I had no sound coming from the bass. I checked though my connections quickly to make sure that I had everything plugged in correctly found that the 9 volt in the preamp was screaming hot and actually starting to smoke a bit. I pulled it out and quickly checked everything out and did not see any issues but I really can’t see the back of the battery box . As a test I put another battery in and found everything to work as advertised . So this brings me to my questions. It is possible that the first battery was in backwards ( I have been cautious about making sure there is a fresh battery so I change it a lot) but I would not think that this would cause a direct short to ground which this appeared to be. 1) is the direct short possible with it backwards? If not how? 2) I was planning on changing the pre out in a few months should I be thinking about this sooner than later? I use this bass at least once per month at church and I like the bass 3). In the preamp change does all the current pre’s available out there have the ability to go passive with a dead/missing battery. The stock BART MK1 defiantly does not, which is a concern. Especially if the battery is on fire:).

The bass is a stock skyline 5501, plays great and sounds pretty good to me.
Thanks for the help.

Well I found the short a resistor was poking through the insulation and either grounding to a pot or just going bad. The resistor is on the battery terminals so the battery in backwards may have played apart. So answer to #1&2 are yes and yes. Now which preamp?

Well, I decided on the Audere classic 4 band after some reading. I know that it will not switch to passive but they have battery meter I can add and I have a quick change battery box. Hopefully the install goes smoothly
