Problem with T-Rex Fuel Tank Junior?

Hi Gang,

Anyone encounter this before?

Last night, I received a T-Rex Fuel Tank Junior. I plugged it into my board. A very small board with a tuner, a chorus pedal, and a VT Bass DI. All analog. There was a very, very loud, hum. I quickly shut everything down. Then, I plugged my board back into my 1spot
transformer to try and figure out what was wrong. The hum was gone. However, one of my pedals (EHX Bass Clone) no longer works. The bottom line is that I think received a faculty Fuel Tank Junior and it killed one of my pedals.

As someone who knows I thing or two about electronics, I know how this might happen. I'm just surprised it did.

I think the issue might lie in the EHX Bass Clone itself. The T-Rex can run 5 x 9VDC isolated outputs (120 mA each) ... if your clone requires more or less than the T-Rex can handle, there's your problem.

I may be oversimplifying (and someone will be along, very quickly, to correct me if I am, lol :laugh:)

The 1spot (assuming your were using this model):

can handle UP TO 1700mA. Meaning, you could have a total of 1700mA drawn across the 9 possible connections (if you had all of them on at once). This also means that you could have 5 drawing 100mA each and 1 drawing 500mA and the 1spot would be fine. The T-Rex wouldn't.

Thanks for the reply. That is the 1spot.

The Bass Clone only draws like 10mA and it was an isolated output. It was well below what the T-Rex can handle. That should not be a problem. And underpowering the Bass Clone (which was not the problem) wouldn't kill the pedal, as far as I know.

My guess is a short in the T-Rex that caused it to deliver way more than 9V.

Understood, but my point was that they say if you use something other than the named adapter, that you might damage the pedal and void the warranty.
With my Le Bass, it can run with another power supply and some people do it... but it comes with its own adapter and that's the only one that I will use with it. I figure, why try and engineer a solution to a problem that there is already a solution to?

I hear that. And no doubt, I'll hear that from T-Rex.

Everything you buy says "only use our adapter". They are just covering their asses. If we all did that, there would no market for 1spot, T-Rex, or any other power supply. And we would need a dozen adapters for a 12-pedal pedalboard.

Full disclosure, I run the same 1spot that you do to those of my pedals that can run on batteries. The rest either use their own adapter or are powered by my Truetone CS12 :thumbsup: So I'm right there with you when it comes to what we should be able to do ;)
