Push/Pull pot wiring to add/subtract J pickup in P/J? ? 2 knob

I've got a P Bass that has an added J pickup and I'm trying to find the best way to wire a push/pull pot to add the J. It's 2 knobs, V/T -I've done the toggle switch thing but don't want to alter this this pickguard and don't want to go that route.

I'll primarily play it as a P bass, but want to pull the push/pull to add in the J pickup - I don't need to solo the J so it's either all P or both.

I'd like to do this on the volume knob, I just can't figure out how to wire it. Do I wire it to turn the J ON or wire it for both ON and the push setting will kill the J pickup?

Either way, any help from some wiring experts would be appreciated!

This is obviously not the whole wiring diagram, just the push-pull volume control. "P+" and "J +" are the Precision and Jazz Bass pickups' hot wires. J pickup will be engaged when the pot is pulled UP, when pushed down the J pickup will be totally out of the circuit. The light blue lines on the switch are optional, but may increase reliability by doubling up the contacts.

either way you want

i'd set it so the sound you used the most was "down" and the "special option" was up; i'd also use the tone knob for the push pull just because it's more out of the way but that's me

Hey Crater! Thanks for this, sorry for the delay - just finally wired it up tonight, I think I didn’t read your explanation correctly, or my original post wasn’t well written. The diagram you gave me, which is excellent by the way, has pure P (push) and pure J (pull), but I was hoping to have pure P bass (push) and both the P And the J at the same time (pull).

It’s possible that I wired it wrong, using one of the newer CTS ones but they all correspond to the Bourna style. Either way, it impossible to have both on at the same time or is a one or the other situation? Thanks again!

It's supposed to be both pickups ON when pulled, note that the P-pickup's hot wire - colored red in my diagram - is wired straight to the volume pot, only the J pickup is switched in or out. Keep in mind that because of insertion loss, the volume of both pickups may be slightly less than the P pickup by itself, this is normal for a passive circuit.
