Double Bass Put your critic's hat on?

Just pay your kidnappers the ransom, (however much they want), or, if that's not possible, beg them to shoot you in the head...ASAP. Twice.
Sheesh.
IMFO, of course. (IANAHN - I Am Not A Hostage Negotiator.)

So, curious... if it's not too painful - I don't want to cause anyone PTSD - can you tell me what it is that makes you say that? I'm wondering if we're both responding to the same things.

I liked this album when it came out and generally appreciate the broader genre of indie-folk music that Beirut was a part of in the 2000-2010 era (Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, etc.). It's not something I reach for these days and I can understand this not being to everyone's tastes, but I think that this is a cool sounding group to have basically been pop music when it came out. I'm not really familiar with music which is being released today, but pretty much everything I hear on the radio is worse than this.

Hmmm, thanks! What is it about it that you like? I'm finding the out-of-tune and lack of instruments playing together a deal-breaker for me but I know some people that like it and I'm trying to understand what they like about it.

Does it have.....

A melody? Check.
Chord progression? Check
Humans actually creating and performing the sounds you hear? Check

Sure, there's pitch problems all over the place, it ain't the tightest ensemble I've ever heard, nor the most adventurous/intricate melodies or harmonies ever, but the fact that it has those three things place it heads and shoulders over computer-generated techno-trance stuff, people screaming or rapping obscenities at me, or music based upon nonsensical planing of "power chords" (distortion-laden open fifths, which aren't chords in the first place). All of those things make me want to stab my eardrums. I'm with @Abington ... I didn't hear anything overtly awful or offensive, and I hear overtly awful and offensive every time I'm in a public place that's streaming the "music of today."

It's very much of its time and influenced/inspired all sorts of crap bands here in Seattle. IIRC correctly it was kind of a homebrew/lo-fi mostly solo recording project, but memory is what it is. It has its charms but they're not lasting. Kind of like having a brief fling with a cute and crunchy hipster barista.

Thanks for chiming in. I generally like "original"-sounding music and my taste goes to the pretty avant guarde. As I said, in this case, I couldn't get passed the first horn section when each horn had a different tuning and I found the singer... flat a lot with poor breath support. But, I can tell that many of the instrumentalists are very competent on their instruments, with beautiful tone, just out of pitch and not playing in unison, so I think that's intentional, and that might be the case for the vocalist too. He might be a very skilled singer trying to sound unskilled, or he might just be terribly unskilled; I can't tell.

As I said, I can usually get down with all kinds of "experimental" music but after giving it some thought, I've come across one either genre that I don't care for and that's twelve-tone or tone-row music. Not melodic enough for me.

Still, it's just music and it's all subjective, so it's good to get other's perspectives. The link I posted seems to be fairly popular, so clearly, it's my bug to bear.

That's interesting, and an interesting cultural take. Kind of grunge goes pop? I also don't care for grunge or heavy metal most of the time. Even the Grateful Dead gets turned off pretty quickly, but at least I get the appeal in those cases.

Again, thanks for the cultural relevance. That's very helpful to put it into perspective.

This track reminded me of a TV show from England some years ago hosted by Jools Holland. It featured name people as well as off the wall quirky British and American groups. It was fun to watch and hear some of them for the totally live aspect and for the novelty but most were not what I'd want to hear more than once.

I guess I'd say the whimsical instrumentation and epic movie-music vibe are appealing to me. It's not holding as well right now and I haven't listened to it for close to ten years I'd say.
