+ Quote / Toggle Multi-Quote

Sorry for the newbie question here, but can someone help me understand exactly what the "+ Quote" / "- Quote" on a post does? The tool tip reads "Toggle Multi-Quote"...but it's not apparent to me what this actually does.

You click “+ quote” on multiple replies in a a thread, and then “insert quotes” in the reply box to insert the quotes. “- quote” will remove it from the list of quotes you selected.
