Double Bass Radial PZ-Pro

Ooooh! I’ve used the original bassbone for a long time and it’s good but not ideal. This looks like a better option. Now if they would just make it work with a normal 9v power instead of their usual oddball 15v, that’d be great.

i enjoyed the JDV as a DI as it was pretty transparent. The other radial products add a "color" i'm not too fond of. I've since drank the Black Box Kool-Aid when it comes to taming a piezo pickup. still a great option for doublers who can't afford a Felix.

It's similar to the PZ-Pre (which I use all the time and love), except it adds a mic input with phantom power so you can use a mic as well as a pickup through it. That is a significant improvement. The video says it's shipping in March - price tag $499, so not sure I'll be getting one right away! But looks like another great piece of gear from Radial.

Does anyone have experience with the PZ-Pro now that we're heading into 2022? I'm curious about the hi/lo shelving EQ points and how well it works for upright (and even fretless electric) bass.

I'm still loving my Grace Designs Felix, but there are a few things about the PZ-Pro that look interesting. I'm not gigging the upright at all right now and sometimes feel the Felix is way overkill for sitting unused, or even goofing off with at home. I still do some sessions, and the Felix is handy for those, but the studios I've been in often have equal or better mic pres.

FWIW, my bass is set up with a Realist and I blend an AMT-25 mic through the Felix. I prefer 1Meg input Z with the Realist over the 10Meg input Z, which is where the PZ-Pro is set. I also (used to) send the Realist to my amp and then separate pickup/mic signals to FOH so that they could be EQ'd and blended as needed. That also allowed the pickup to go to stage monitors/in-ears as needed. Looks like the PZ-Pro would lose the channel independence.

I'm not ready to give up the Grace, but the PZ-Pro might cover my (non) needs just fine.
