I'm a touring bassist and I just got a back-up bass in the form of a 5 string Korean Tune Bass Maniac.
I love the way it plays, and looks, but the sound I'm finding is very thin and the balance between strings is really poor. The pre-amp I'm finding also is pretty terrible, for example the treble control dimed is insanely harsh and distorted, and in an attempt to mellow the sound when turning it all the way down there's basically no difference between that and the center detent. Having tried Bartolini PJs and EMGs I'm kinda torn on what would sound good. Looking for a very authoritative sound.
What are you're favorite 5 string PJ Pickup and preamp combos? I'm leaning toward EMG because a project bass of mine has a BQC system in it I could rip and it would be easy, but I would love to hear some recommendations from TalkBass.
