I pulled a really beat up Squier off the wall at my local music store and played it and was shocked at how great it felt and how good it sounds. It was dirt cheap, so I bought it.
Finally I had my relic project.
I aged the hardware by using 600 grit sandpaper and then soaking the parts in sulphuric acid (Torpedo drain cleaner), and then dipping them in water (which causes a reaction).
When I started sanding the body, I found out that damn thing is a wood core with most of the body being made from luthite plastic resin. Damn! Yeah, but it’s light and it sounds great.
I ordered some 70’s waterslide decals from OldFret and got a can of matching black paint and clear coat from the automotive section of my local hardware store (Canadian Tire).
Anyway, I love this new bass. I won’t be all neurotic about scratching or denting it.
IMO it looks great, sounds amazing, and has beautiful low action and a great feel. I got lucky. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste, but I had fun and it’s now totally unique.
And just got the record, I looked high and low for Squier decals but couldn’t fibd any. I would have preferred to put the Squier name on it as I think they are good instruments.
