Relieving Pandemic Stress - Trying out some new strings!

I don't know about you guys but one of my favorite things to do as a bass player is trying out some new strings.

Usually, I am on the warmer side of the scale as far as string preferences. This time around, I decided to revisit the bright, clanky side of the spectrum by ordering some stainless steel roundwounds.

I just placed an order at Strings and Beyond for these:

• Galli MSB Stainless Steel Roundwound 45-105
• Ernie Ball Stainless Steel Super Slinky Bass 45-100
• La Bella Rx Series Stainless Steel Bass RX-S4B 45-100

I am especially looking forward to try out the Gallis. I was not aware that Galli strings where available in North America. I thought they were strictly a European brand available in Europe only.

As for now, the only thing for sure, is that I will try the Gallis on my BB.

I will probably used the other sets on my Jazz basses. I just might make an impression thread once I get the new strings.

Any love for stainless steel strings around here?

Any love for stainless steel strings around here?

I tried four sets of SS rounds on three different basses in four months between April and July, only to realize I'm a nickel guy deep down after all. So, back to Alloy 52/NPS/Pure Nickel.

Even though I tend to like nickel, just put on a set of 9050L's as an experiment the other day and am liking the data I'm collecting.

I voted for BRONZE!!! Bronze strings are terrible. I don't even use them on my acoustic guitars. But in a week when there's 500 posts about TI flats there's gonna be 1 shining vote for bronze. Just thinking about how terrible my beloved Sabre would sound with bronze strings makes me laugh out loud.
And that is good for pandemic stress.

I’ve been doing the same thing. Luckily I don’t feel so bad about it because I’ve been upgrading pickups & bridges as well!
Just installed and tried out some 40-100 DR Sunbeams for the first time ever and feel really great about them overall. Such a great feel & tone!
Of course now I wanna give Hi-Beams a go.. it truly never ends

I like bright strings and some 'zing', but find stainless steels a little too bright.. I find nickel plated rounds the best. I feel like the nickels also have a little more midrange that I like.

Nothing stainless for me, but alloys, nickel plated and nickel are fine.

I’ve been on an exploration for the lightest sets I can find.

GHS Boomers .30 are the lightest so far, with D’Addario XL .35 next.
Nothing heavier than the DR Pure Blues VW .40. The DR’s are similar tension to TI jazz flats, my choice for flats. The others are slinkier than TI flats.

I really like the boomers on the P. The other basses need longer sets.

Might try some Rotosound funkmasters if I can get past the stainless thing.

I’ve had DR High Beams on my Sadowsky Metro since I got it earlier this year. I love those strings, and they really maximize the “hi-fi” vibe that it already gives off in spades. I just got a set of Lebella nickel rounds to try in a slightly lighter gauge. I’ve had TI flats on my main for awhile now, and my touch has gotten a lot lighter by playing them so often. I’m hoping the nickels will be a little more mellow, but still allow me to dial in some sizzle with the active pre.

Since the pandemic is all about bedroom sound I've been trying tape wound black strings LaBella and GHS and it turns out they feel better than and have more brightness than flats and they've made my Schecter CV5 a bass I can't stop playing. It had super bright and exaggerated mids like Schecters DO, but the tapewounds catch enough mid to preserve that voice and no fret noise. I'm sure they would record great too.

Nickel plated rounds for me. I did have a thing for awhile though for the Fender pure nickels back when they were still being made in Mexico. If I’d known they were going to switch to having a different company make them I would have bought a whole bunch.
