My sons and I have been having some rowdy jam sessions since quarantine started (see below) and we just had a rented DB fall and snap the neck clean at the heel (pic below). So I rent this 1/10 scale DB for my 4th grader for an arm and a leg, plus I pay for the insurance. The shop is currently closed until further notice and not accepting rental returns. But I emailed them and asked them to let me drop it off at the shop, for repair or whatever they want to do. I feel bad about it and will probably go along with whatever they want because they're the local shop, but I don't really want to hang on to it broken until Fall, and I was hoping that someone here might be able to help give me an idea of what a reasonable resolution looks like in this situation.

I've seen quite a few low end basses with repaired breaks on the neck heel. What makes this one terminal?

If the break was further back, that would be one thing, but it's in the absolute worst part of the heel. That spot has to withstand terrible strain, and there's just not enough meat there.

It can be epoxied, but epoxy creeps and the joint will eventually fail. Once it fails, that's it.

The bass broke; sure that's a bummer, but...

1000+ points to for teaching your kids to live life strong and not let your fears undermine your enthusiasm for life! That is the kind of father and bass player I strive to be!

Events like that are why rental companies charge you $7000 in fees and insurance for a $300 wholesale bass and then try to make you feel guilty about it. Bass necks break all the time, especially cheap rental bass necks. They'll glue it back together and pass it off to another person and make $7k more from them. Take it back, get another, and keep up the family jam sessions!

Make sure you inform them and your credit card company that the item broke, they are closed and refusing to help you, and that the rental agreement should be cancelled immediately, or they may keep charging you for it...and stand strong when they try to say you broke a $7000 bass...
