Here is my conundrum: the speaker in my EA Whizzy 110 is blown. It is distorting heavily and has a terrible ground hum. I’m assuming I’ll need to replace the speaker. I could order one from Gollihur for just shy of $300 CAD. It’s a great speaker for DB but I’m playing more EB these days and it’s just not loud enough at rehearsals (2 guitars, keys, drums, 2 singers). I also have to play synth parts on my EB (this could be the reason why it gave up the ghost).

I bought it used with the carry case for $325 4 years ago. It owes my nothing at this point. It was a great small rehearsal practice amp and DB gigging amp. The local L&M has a GK Neo 112 which looks a little more appealing for what I’d need/want.

Not sure what I’m going to do. Need to stew over this for a day or two. What would you folks do? And is there a fourth option I’m not seeing?

Hello. Sell it as is for repair and move on. Maybe Gollihur will want it to fix and sell as refurbished. In any case, nothing lasts forever; not even excellent things. Good Luck!

FYI EA has shut down. If Gollihur has the correct replacement now, he probably won't in the very near future. So consider if you will want the Wizzy in the future. If the answer is yes, fix it ASAP!

Per the specs:
Wizzy 110
  • Sensitivity (2.83Vrms): 102dB @ 1m. It's a 4 ohm cab so this the same as 99dB 1W/1m
  • Sound Pressure: 126dB @ 1m
  • Power Handling: 250 watts
GK Neo 112 (this is from the series II manual)
  • Sensitivity: 98dB 1W1/m . It's an 8 ohm cab
  • Sound Pressure: 122dB
  • Power Handling: 300W
The GK takes a little more power but it is less efficient and has a lower max SPL. It's not a solution for your problem.

Looking at those specs side by side, it makes me lean more toward the speaker replacement. According to the Gollihur website they picked up the remaining EA warehouse stock and have 24 speakers left. Thanks for the help!

4th option: Send it to a reputable speaker repair shop and have it repaired. I bet it'll cost a lot less than replacing, or selling as-is for cheap and buying something else. If you love it, fix it. YMMV.

There are no factory recone kits available. This is a custom part, anything that will “fit” is going to result in a “random speaker in a box”.
