Double Bass RIP Robert Black.

It is huge loss for the instrument. I never got to meet him, but I know a few of his students. He did a lot for the bass.
This piece is especially interesting to me since it is the intersection of conceptual art and the double bass:

I just learned about this, and found out from his obituary that Robert Black commissioned a work from John Luther Adams. Apparently titled "Three Nocturnes", but I can't find a recording anywhere. RB's passing is a huge loss to the music world!

Robert was incredibly friendly and giving with any information he had. I was lucky enough to speak with him at length about both modern music and ancient music, and he was incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful with anything he said. I am so sorry for his family and close loved ones and friends. A true mensch and a master bassist is gone too soon

A musical force of nature (as David Lang called him) and one of the most unique human beings around. I’m sure there’ll be no shortage of tributes to him over the next several weeks, but I’ll just share that one of my favorite moments as a student of Robert’s was turning pages for him as he performed that Darboven piece. I was far more nervous during that than I have ever been for any audition or performance.
