He is a giant.
Back in the 70s, his recordings on Melodiya/Columbia were my intro to the world of classical double bass. I was both flabbergasted and inspired. These recordings caused me to drop studying both piano and DB and focus solely on DB.

And yes — all this on gut! I’m pulling out my VINYL.
