Double Bass Roy Haynes has died

What an amazing career and long life! He played with everybody and seemed to stay at the forefront of whatever was happening musically at the time. I saw him and his band once and his bass player missed a flight and his piano player had his right arm in a sling. It ended up being a bass-less trio with drums, tenor and LH piano and was still a great show. RH was funny as hell on the mic between tunes too. Safe journey, Roy Haynes. You were one of a kind.

He played with Prez, so Bird wasn’t the “earliest “ cat he played with. I first heard him at a concert at Berklee in 75 or 76-Hannibal Marvin Peterson on trumpet and Tony Purrone on guitar (can’t remember who played bass guitar)- and the last time I heard him was at Birdland on the 60 something anniversary of his performance on opening night in December 1949. Jaleel Shaw, Robert Rodriguez, and Gary Wang were the band…

I last heard him at his 95th birthday show. He was my very favorite drummer. I have lots of favorites, but he was my very favorite. Listening right now to "Now He Sings, Now he Sobs".

All the greats he played with, over decades!

Stellar company aside, his own project, the Fountain of Youth band, was fantastic. Here's a "trailer" showing the recording of Roy-Alty, released when he was a sprightly 88 year old:

RIP.
