Hey all,

My main bass is a Sadowsky NYC PJ 5 string. I had noticed that the input jack started becoming a little "crackly" a few months ago, but it was intermittent and only acted up if the cable was really moved around a lot (when I play, the cable is tucked through the strap and stays mostly in place), so I didn't give it much thought.

Last night at a jam it was crackling like crazy and if the cable moved at all, I would get a hum and no signal reaching then amp. I assume the input jack is failing (or dirty?) - any suggestions as to what to do to resolve?

Do I buy any aftermarket jack and replace? Is there something special about the jack in the NYCs? I checked the Sadowsky website and do not see any options to buy a replacement. Anyone have any experience with this on NYCs?

@Sadowsky
I did send Roger an email, but thought I would ask the bass universe as well.

Thanks!

It sounds to me like you've got some cracked/worn solder on the connections. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you should just reflow the connections to the jack. If that's now doing it (and you're sure it's not your cable), just replace the jack. It's just a standard stereo jack.

FWIW:
My NYC JJ4 started doing the same thing. I pulled the input socket from the body and found that when it was installed, it was situated with the connector arm on the downward position in the routed channel.

This was causing, when the cable was plugged in, the cable weight to pull the cable downward just enough to cause the tip of the cable connector to momentarily part from the tip of the input socket pin/arm.

I rotated the input socket 90 degrees so the the tip of the socket arm was oriented top side instead of bottom side. This allowed the cable weight to push the connector pin upward toward the socket arm and maintain a constant, solid connection.

for me, it was a Permanent fix

The Switchcraft looks like a better jack. The insulators are much thicker between the metal plates.

The other brand just looks like junk IMO.

Knowing Roger you already got your answer.
Roger did email me with some suggestions and asked for a pic of the jack so he could advise on replacement if that was necessary...that was right before Christmas and I have not heard back, but I am sure that is because he is taking some time off for the holidays. I plan to open things up this week and see if there is an obvious issue (loose connection, dirty) and go from there.
