School me on the Fender Mustang

I’m a long time guitar player that’s getting more into playing bass. I have a Sterling ray4 but was looking at getting a short scale in addition. I have been looking at the Mustang — the JMJ road worn and the American Performer in particular.

What big differences would I notice between those two? Those JMJs sure do seem to be popular and hold their value. All the used ones I see are not much below new. There’s a used performer in mint near me that I can get for less than a used JMJ.

Wasn’t looking at the Player or the Vintera but let me know if I should be.

Thanks!

I have a JMJ, and it's a great little bass. It's my only MIM instrument. The quality level is quite high. I played an American Performer and thought it also was good, but I already had the JMJ by then.
Personally, I like the flats that came with the JMJ, and the JMJ's worn-in feel, but I don't think you could go wrong with either. (Of course, you could always put flats on any bass, if you desire!)
I've never been satisfied with MIM Fenders except for the Road Worn series, so I think you're on the right track with focusing on these two options.
One slightly vexing thing about the JMJ is that Fender put it in a guitar-sized gig bag, so it's a right squeeze to zip it at the headstock.

That’s funny. I have the Vintera and I really like it. Lots of snarl, like it’s got some pent up anger for folks calling it a short scale all its life.

Anyways, they gave it to me in a Fender bass gig bag (standard size). It swims around in that thing. Got me one of those new Douglas blue tweed cases from Rondo. Anybody need a gig bag?

I'll bet the Vintera is nice, too. I've never seen one in the wild.
