Having never owned any Fender instruments until I began buying Squiers a few years ago, I was spared the aggravation of adjusting pickup heights with pot metal screws that tear up even when I use my Lyman gunsmith screwdrivers, hardened, precisely milled and all.

So, for the more experienced than me . . . .

IS there a source for hardened Fender pickup height screws, and . . . .

What brand would you recommend for a all-four sizes Phillips set (and Allen wrenches while we're at it)?

Thanks,

JW

It could be that the screws are JIS and not Philips; they look similar but the angles are slightly different. JIS screws are common on Japanese equipment, possibly in other Asian countries as well. They are sometimes designated by a small dot on the head, but maybe not on finished or chrome screws. I've been meaning to get a set of proper JIS screwdrivers, they really do make a difference.

If it’s imported, get some JIS drivers. Here’s the skinny on JIS v Phillips.

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard)

I used to get mine from Wiha but a casual search didn't turn up anything on current Wiha JIS so they may not make them any more, but Vessel does. My experience with Vessel is as a Honda motorcycle service tech. Vessel made a lot of the special tools for Honda and of course the Vessel impact driver every kid with a motorcycle in the 70’s had in their tool kit. If I was looking for some good JIS drivers today i’d be looking for the tool truck guys to see if they had them, or maybe buy a single Vessel and see how it was before dropping a C note on a set.
