I put together a cheap parts P bass to leave at the practice space and I got a good deal on a set of Quarter Pound pickups.
I've heard mixed reviews on this pickup. Some say they are too scooped in the mids, some say they are too bassy and some say they are too trebly.
My results are they are very trebly and have a lot of mids, especially high mids. The bass response is about average. I compared them to my other bass with the Steve Harris sig pickup and the only real difference is that the Quarter pounds are brighter and have less lower mids. My other p basses have Bartolinis. One is a Classic series set and one is an older set unknown model. Again and no surprise, they are much brighter and higher output than both Barts.
I'm not getting the scooped mid characteristic that everyone seems to have.
I use D'Addario EXL165 nickles which are pretty even across the frequency spectrum.
I did notice that this model pickup is newer since the label says Seymour Duncan and the older sets say Basslines.
Did they change the sound of the pickups or is this just a case of YMMV?
