Short scale strings

Hi,

Im needing new strings for my modern player short scale bass. It measures just over 32” from ball end to headstock side of the nut.
Most shortscale strings have a winding length of 32”. Will these work or do I need medium scale instead?
Ghs offer 32.75” but unfortunately I can’t find them available where I am.

thanks

In your case,
- I'd be wary of Ibanez's Mikro and Dogal short-scale sets (reports describe both as very short);
- strings with dead-on 32" windings should work fine (occasionally, you may have to initially install them with a phone card or similar between string and nut, so that they are allowed to stretch during the course of the first couple of days, until their tapering point clears the board side of the nut);
- other short-scale strings (including Pyramid and DR, which are over 33") will work no prob;
- medium-scale should work too, depending on how close the lowest string tuning post is to the nut (can you measure the distance between it and the ball-end anchoring point?);
- which continent are you at? We may be able to suggest you an online string store that sells there.

Thanks, I’ll check out length to the first tuner. I’m in Europe so I have plenty of online options like Thomann but GHS were the only that I found where winding length was perfect and those I can’t seem to find anywhere.
Pyramid and dr sound promising. I’m not too worried, I’ll figure it out

thanks again

Regarding GHS short-scale strings and their availability in Europe:

Lord of the Strings/Gitaarsnaren is often a good first stop, with decent selection and a low shipping rate
Lord of the Strings

Schneidermusik and Strings Direct are worth checking out, too
4-string sets
Short Scale GHS Bass Guitar

Saitenmarkt is also a great resource, but doesn't appear to be carrying GHS shorties at the moment
