should i get gallien krueger microbass amp?

i say this bass at sam ash. it sounds really good. i'm interested in the speaker out it has and it's small size and weight.

Gallien-Krueger MicroBass MB150S/112 1x12

would this gk amp plus a external speaker be louder then my ampeg ba115hp and/or cut through a line 6 spider valve mk2 212?

Ampeg: Bass Amp Series - BA115HP

Line 6

at the sam ash, they had a new fender 112 external cab, which was very light, for $300. and their was a used ampeg 4x8 for $200.

In my view it's not a super loud amp. The small size of the speaker box comes at the expense of efficiency. I gained an easy 6 dB by switching to my homemade 12" with a more powerful amp, and when topped with a micro head, the rig still weighs less than the MB150 series, though it's physically bigger.

Now, the MB150 is an ingenious design, and I love mine, but I've joined the lightweight bandwagon.

As for the BA115, it's on the heavy side of 15" combos, and I expect there are 12" systems that could compete with it, while weighing less. If you're interested in cutting weight, you should only be considering Class-D bass heads. What I don't know is the extent to which the really lightweight speakers have made it to the mass retailers.

I have a G-K microbass, but I prefer to use an external cab, it sounds so much better. The built in speaker has a buzzing sound I can't stop. With an external cab, it's probably louder than my BA-115. If I could do it again, I would just get a G-K amp head and a cab.

I would look closely for air leaks, for instance if any of the screws are missing. I put electrical tape over the screw holes in the sides, that are for attaching the amp to a stand. Also, if it's particularly ancient, the speaker may have air leaks due to decay of the foam surround.

I love my MB150. It is equally versatile for electric and upright. It is not particularly loud on its own, and it is quite expensive. It is loud considering it's size, but won't do much more than fill a small coffee house. It can compete with most full size rigs once I add a full size cabinet (either a 1X15 or a 4X10). The external speaker out is a bit deceptive. It only adds between 50 and 100 watts to the output, so don't expect a powerhouse, but it can fill a medium-sized venue easily.

I hate to ask the obvious, but here goes. What is your budget? Have you considered used gear? How loud do you want to be?
i don't have a budget anymore. my temp work is over. i want a set up that is louder then my ampeg ba115hp, while being lighter and/or smaller.

this gk combo amp has a external speaker out. so, i'm wondering, if combined with a fender 112, would be louder then my ampeg. at the time, i could have bought the gk amp for $600. the fender was $300. the cab doesn't have to be the fender.

Why don't you have a look at Carvin's Microbass amps. They are fantastic lightweight amps for low money. I've had one for over three years and it has been fantastic. Right now you can get the MB15 with the 15" extension cab for less than 500.00. That is a bargain. Its 250 watts, the combo and extension cab are about 30 lbs each, it has a line out for a PA if needed, has a compressor built in,and a very nice EQ section. You can get it with a 12" driver 3 way setup, a 2/10 or a single 10 configuration also. And it gets very loud. Of course that all goes out the window if you don't live in the U.S.A.

Istnamebassist and I seem to follow each other to these posts. He recommended the Carvin MB15 to me and not only did I buy that (with a neo speaker to lighten it more), I also ordered the matching extension 115MBE. What a great combination, and for the power, especially small and light. Cost me $801 out the door last Labor Day weekend on sale including the upgraded neo speakers. Take advantage of their sales. (I'm going to have to shoot a new photo, been using this one a lot.)

Yeah we are fans I guess! A big difference in price with the neo speakers installed, but if I remember right you got the cabs down to about 24 lbs each, and I'm betting the neos sound great! And yes a new picture with a Hawaiian shirt and one of your acoustic ukulele basses!

You are lucky, in that you are at the beginning of the problem cycle, not the end. You haven't sunken a lot of money into a rig that can't be upgraded without a total redo. However, your rig weighs 86 lbs, is in a hard to carry cube form, and doesn't do an extension speaker out. I hear you. There are a lot of better combos or even used cab + amp rigs that are lighter and way louder, but we are talking about something costing ~$800—at least for used modular gear (head and cab). For a better new combo, probably about $700 or so.

IME, if you have a micro head and a good 8 ohm cabinet, the total weight is often less than many combos, and the performance is better. Plus, you can change individual components, i.e., better cab(s), or more powerful/lighter/cooler head. I agree having a combo with an extension speaker out might help you in your situation, but in reality, it is just going to make pulling out of the kind of situation you are in more expensive in the long run.

IMHO, after adding an extension speaker, with a few exceptions you are stuck at the end of the road. If you want a change, your entire rig has to be replaced, not just one component, unless you integrate the extension speaker—a strategy I once used, but which has some built in disadvantages I will skip here.

So, a job and some savings must come first. Meanwhile, do some research. Go hear some bands. Talk to other bass players in your area whose amps you can see and hear. Look at Talkbass classifieds. The sellers can help you via private messages and in the for sale thread.
This web site is a good place to see selection and prices: Bass Guitar Amps | Sweetwater.com

Don't know which continent you are on, but if it is North America, you might look at Craigslist or Kijiji for used gear once you have a better idea of what you want.

I can only say I've been through the pain of huge deafening double Marshall stacks hearing loss and hernias, but now use just a Gallien-Krueger microbass 150E combo amp. for several decades now for everything. It's still as good as new. It's a quality instrument. Solidly built. I use it with a vintage Fender Jazz Bass and find it gives me a fantastic choice of tones for all styles of music. In fact the best tone I've ever got from that bass. It's perfect for studio work and plenty loud enough for gigs in small to medium size halls. In reality at bigger gigs I find there is always a huge sound system provided and the sound guys simply take a feed out the back into the mixing desk! Biggest advantage? I can carry a bass under one arm and the GK amp slung over the other. I have sometimes wondered about getting the GK 112 extension cabinet, but in reality I find the combo is loud enough for me as it is with perfect clarity for folk, jazz, acoustic, country, etc. and even funky stuff. People are genuinely surprised at how loud such a tiny amp can be. Although, I agree, if you're into heavy metal it's obviously not the right amp for you. Can wholeheartedly recommend.
