Double Bass signal chain: EDB-2 to active monitor and FOH?

Hej hej,

I'm running my bass into an EDB-2 into an active monitor (EV Everse 8).

How would I get my signal to the FOH while keeping my personal monitor?

Is it possible to use the EDB-2's line out and DI out at the same time? (One for my monitor, one for FOH) The EV8 has an XLR Mix Out to be used for other active speakers, could it be send to the FOH? I can't rely on PAs being able to send me a bass-only signal for my EV8.

Cheers!

I split my dual-pickup output signal immediately after my blending dual-channel pre-amp using a simple mono line splitter cable, before heading out to my amp and/or to the FOH, so I always have 2 signals available, whether there is an available line-out or not.

This very simple solution has worked for years with no problem.

This also alleviates a situation where an amp's line-out cuts off sound coming from the amp.

Doesn't this cause horrible ground loop noises (besides some loss of signal)?

I mean, there are active and passive splitter-boxes, some fairly expensive, designated to allow splitting without loss of signal or creating hum loops. For years I used a Lehle Dual active ABY box for a dual amp setup - almost always at least one of the amps had an increase in hum. (Not to be rude but just to explain why I find it hard to believe it's that simple.)

All I can say is I've used the splitter cable on stage with both an amp and a feed to FOH many times with no problems and no complaints. Maybe there's a theoretical reason not to do it, but I've never had a problem.

It's been so reliable that I have the splitter cable mounted on my DB just below my preamp, so there's no chance of forgetting or loosing it.

Short answer - yes, use the DI to feed to the FOH and the line out to your powered monitor.

Maybe I'm just dense, but I've always sent the FOH through the DI, and 1/4" to the powered speaker. I guess you have an amp, powered monitor, and FOH all running concurrently?

Hi Ric! You probably remembered correctly that I did run an amp and powered monitor concurrently! But not anymore: in rehearsals I solely relied on the active monitor and now I wanted to make sure how to reach FOH if necessary. I rarely play gigs and when I do there's no time/nerve to try out different things. I couldn't find anything about using both outs in the EDB-2's manual that's why I needed to ask you guys before I'd end up at the gig having ground loop hum.
You're the only one who said explicitly that you did use both - not in theory, but in practice - and it worked. Thank you very much!

Just FYI - you can do the same with any preamp that has both. I do it with my Phil Jones and my Fishman Platinum Pro. Used to do it with my EDB-2, but it broke.

The only thing is that the 1/4“ out of a preamp is typically designed as an instrument level signal, but since many use it for a power amp or powered cab too (adjustable with the output volume control), it should work with both.

The output impedance of the typical preamps is compatible with instrument and power amp inputs. It‘s just a different output level.

With a combo amp that has a DI out it‘s that the preamp out is internally connected to the power amp in.
But both parts use the same power supply.

For the avoidance of ground loops, power the preamp and amp/powered speaker from the same power outlet. The DI should have a ground lift switch if needed for FOH.
