skype lessons?

Yes I take lessons via GoMeeting (like Skype), works great. Skype, etc. gives access to personal lessons from great players that you might otherwise not have access to due to geographic location.

There are some things you can do in face-to-face lessons that don't work via Skype, but for most purposes I've found Skype lessons to be a great option. I've done lessons with Julie Slick and Marcho Machera via Skype, and it worked perfectly because these were more like Q&A sessions than "regular," formal lessons: i.e., mostly I asked them questions and they demonstrated things for me, but I didn't actually do much playing myself. On the other hand, I've done some Skype lessons with a guy with whom I used to take face-to-face lessons and found the Skype format to be somewhat limiting, because one thing he often liked to do was play chords on guitar while I played bass parts over them. That doesn't work over Skype. So, it depends on the nature and goals of the lessons.

I took Skype lessons with Russ Rodgers: Online Bass Lessons

They worked very well and they were actual structured lessons, not just Q&A sessions. Although we couldn't play together at the same time, he would email me audio files ahead of time and have me play along with them while he watched me and listened to me. He also recorded each lesson for me to refer back to, so it was actually better than face to face lessons in some ways. I definitely recommend Skype lessons with Russ Rodgers.

If you do Skype there is a program you can buy called Super Tintin (and probably others, but STT is the one I've used) that allows you to record the Skype session. It's great if you want to refer back and/or transcribe things your instructor plays during the lesson.

I give online lessons via skype. If you want to see what i do and how to contact me further check out my youtube and see if its the kind of thing that you would be interested in. Today ive released the first in my riff of the week series. Check it out! I have very good prices online aswell :)

There are a ton of people (including myself) that offer lessons online via Skype. It's a great way to study with teachers that you might not normally have access to due to your location, schedule, etc.

IMHO, scheduling shouldn't be that big of an issue. Musicians tend to have pretty flexible schedules so you could probably find one in your local area that fits well with yours, especially if you live in the Philly area where there's a good amount of great musicians. Most professional musicians teach, or are willing to teach, so you may have more options than you think.

The real question should be what exactly you are looking for in a teacher? That's the real beauty of lessons online, really finding someone that fulfills the requirements of what you are looking to learn specifically. If you're just looking for generic lessons, your probably better off just doing them in person in your local area. However, if there's something or someone specific you're looking for, Skype could be the way to go.

Hope that helps in your decision making process. Best of luck!

There's nothing on her site about lessons. Did you just email her?

It's been a while, but as I recall the first time might've been a reward for a certain-level contribution to a Kickstarter campaign for one of her albums, but then I later contacted her via email to set up another lesson or two.

Lessons aren't a regular gig for her, so she doesn't advertise it, but you should just email her and ask. What's the worst that could happen? (BTW, if you mention that you got the idea from a TB post by "Lobster11," she'll know who that is.)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a skype teacher who is well versed on fretless? I'm not looking for someone who is, 'oh yea, I play fretless too'. I mean someone who does it all the time. Anyone?
I've played over 40 years and perform regularly on fretless, I'm looking to up the game to a high level.

Hi Chuck, I do Skype lessons if you are interested
