Dear Santa:

I have been a pretty good boy this year, and somehow someone out there heard me (perhaps it was my semi-weekly scouring the internet, and search statistics), that there were few NEW 12 Strings available.

Sure there is the dUg, but it neck dives like a submarine with a bow leak.

Sure, there’s the Dean Rhapsody but the visuals turn me off.

There are the quirky Music Vox which look stellar, but seem to be unobtanium.

There are the Waterstones, cost prohibitive and availability? Scarce.

Wanted and bid on a couple older Oktober 12s = crushing disappointment

There are the 300.00 Chinese music box knock offs but I’m quite certain I’d be disappointed.

Then for November release Schecter stuns me with this:

Well... not me, I'm sad to say. I did look closely at it, and listened to some 12 string demos; but, I'll just have to pass. For one, that's just not a sound I can really use for anything I play. For another; who makes a set of flats for a 12-string bass? No one that I'm aware of - and my nerve damaged fingers do not like round wounds - at all. And, finally? I simply have no more room in my house for another instrument - unless I want to start keeping them in the attic. Which I don't want to do... However... I was also looking - very seriously - at the Stargazer 8-string bass. But, the problem with "no flats" also applies; and, the second time I went to Schecter's web page? The Stargazer-8 had just... disappeared. Haven't seen any mention of it since... Too bad for me, 'cause I might have been able to cobble up a set of flats for an 8-string; that is a tone that I would have some use for; and there's a couple of guitars, taking up space, that I wouldn't mind saying "bye bye" to... Oh, well; story of my life, I guess...

I saw that and am very interested. I don't have a 12ver anymore and would like something in that price range. I want to try it out first though. I have owned a Hamer B12S, Musicvox Space Cadet and 2 Waterstones. The 12vers are always the first piece of gear to go if I need to sell something but I love playing them.

This is me about 20 years ago...

I hear and understand, that said: if you “cobble together “ the flats for an 8 string, you just order another set of Piccolo string to cover the second set of octave strings on the 12!

I DO have a use for the 12 string tones: right now , we are doing some Cheap Trick, and plan on adding some KingsX. It is surprisingly, versatile enough to use in songs not originally performed with the octave.

With an octave (up) pedal and judicious use of chorus , I can get “close enough” but it’s not the real deal.

I’ve had an 8 and a 12 in the past, miss the 12 but not the 8 so much.
There is a richness to the 12 that the 8 doesn’t have.

Tuning octaves to a 5th ? Instant one finger power chord!

Funny, I just saw this today on Reverb.

I'm not really in the market for a 12, but have always had a fascination with 12-string basses especially after working for Kaman as the western U.S. Hamer & Trace Elliot Product Specialist between '93 & '97. I had the opportunity to work with Tom Petersson and Cheap Trick during a So Cal leg of their tour in '96, which culminated in hosting a visit and performance at the Musicians Institute. Fortunately this was videotaped. The entire video used to be available on YouTube, but it's been cut down to only the Q&A portion.

Oddly enough, this event took place not long after Tom had started using Chandler 12's. Rick Nielson chose to point this out during the session as a cheeky dig, so there's some brief banter between Rick, Tom and I which can be seen at around the 23 minute mark on this subject.

BTW, a TP Waterstone 12 is currently for sale on Reverb for $949.

I fell in love pretty instantly. I've regretted selling my Robelli 12 since it happened, and these appear to be wonderful. I might even get the white instead of my usually preferred black because I prefer the ebony over the maple board.

Yes the white is dead sexy. The black headstock accents, and the black binding
