Songwriting, Writer's Block... When the well goes dry....

A few months ago I quit the band I was in to pursue songwriting and recording of my own material. I had plenty of ideas and a good direction, planned on being a 1 man show at first to get the creative direction established. Then if the songs started getting attention then would try to put a band together to support it. Problem is that after committing to the effort, the creative well seems to have dried up.... I'm having very few creative ideas, riffs aren't flowing like they were, etc. What do you do when you have writers block or the creative well has gone dry?

What do you do when you have writers block or the creative well has gone dry?

Read or listen to other good material. Particularly poetry, and particularly for me, Shakespeare. Forms of the language we're not familiar with can give one new & interesting tools to use, and can help shake some of the cobwebs loose.

I'm not a songwriter and I'm not terribly creative either. What I am good at is improving existing ideas. Maybe you just need someone to bounce ideas against.

if i feel i cannot exploit the 'great' ideas...i exploit the crappy ones.


never stop. always practice your craft. take a break from everything when you need to rest.
