Hi chaps,

Just a heads up. If you're interested in stage lighting or are currently lighting your band, David over at Learn Stage Lighting is doing a free 30-day course on his You Tube channel.

The channel's a mine of information and it's all free to watch. Here's a link to the first video in the latest course...

Mods, I hope that's okay to give this a plug!

Sounds interesting, although there is absolutely no content in that first video--just an advertisement. So folks might want to skip it in the series.

Also, it may show my vintage, but that guy reminds me a lot of Tommy Smothers.

Hi Rick,

I had to google Tommy Smothers - I see what you mean! Yes, the first day is just the kick off video, but if you subscribe you'll get the video link each day. I've known David since he started LSL. He's a great, hard-working guy and I always try to point people who might be interested his way. The channel's a tremendous resource for beginners and advanced. Take a look around (hey and I don't have shares in the site, by the way!).

Wasn't Tommy a bass player?
I think Tommy was on guitar. Dick played bass.

What do you have, Wi?

Pretty basic system.

I have 3 of the Chauvet 4 bar sets. I place one in the middle rear of our stage. This fixture is controlled separately via its own footswitch. The two others go on the sides and cover the stage and immediately in front, controlled on their own switch.

That's it. I need simple because I also run the sound while playing and singing in our 3 piece.

That's a pretty decent set up for a small gig....my advice would be to link them through a dmx controller. (the chauvet bar4 lights I have, have 3, 5, and 15 channel dmx options, 15 channel gives you control of each light individually). Any controller based on the chauvet obey 40, or adj DMX operator 192 would be sufficient. Although, for my aspirations if I had to buy over again, I would probably entertain a software based controller like mydmx buddy or the widely promoted dmxis. I'm not a fan of all the strings attached to the software systems though. The way I set mine up scene 1 on all 30banks is a "talk" scene...so no matter where I'm at I can get the stage lit up in a hurry. The remaining 7 scenes in each bank are created for each song, and in those scenes, I take advantage of setting some lights to sound active, or different preprogrammed macros for light movements and other things. Then just press a button for each song and let it run. Its hard to take advantage of strobe effects doing it this way, and there are quite a few limitations of my method, but it works really well, and is a really quick way to get a light show that is cohesive and integrated into your music.

Since we last talked about this, I've watched a bunch of videos and read things about DMX rather than relying on the foot switches that I use now. The possibilities seem very cool but the headaches have also scared me into keeping what I have.

I may change my mind in the future but for now, I'm good
