Hello! I need some helpe on this, please...
I've bought a Steinberger Q5 V1, but the electronics seems changed... It has a non linked Haz Labs preamp in one cavity (it's there stored but not working) and a passive preamp with a battery for the EMGs aktiv PUs.
Can anyone tell me what electronics came from origin and why the bass has two cavities?...
thanks in advance

I see nothing that looks like a HazLabs board, and I don't know what a "passive preamp" would be. A battery for the EMGs plus three 25k pots and a capacitor make a complete set of passive controls for active pickups. Which is what this bass seems to have. Like all other basses there has been a passive EQ and an active EQ option, so this bass could have been both originally. As far as I remember the second cavity has just been there for weight relief, as the Q4/Q5 v1 is a heavy beast. Do you have a pic of the board you're referring to?

Thank you for your help. I've understood. I just don't see any option to passive/active. The preamp I show in this picture was in the second cavity, but not linked. The extra input jack it's there because the previous owner have run a wireless system from there. I would like to put the bass like was in the origin, but I don't find any information. My idea it's those basses used to have EMG, Bartolinis and Basslines pickups but the preamp wass HazLabs in all units. The EMG worked with a 9volt battery and passive pots... But I don't know the role of the Hazlabs preamp in this bass. He plays well passive mode with the EMGs, battery and pots... But I'm confused about the rest. I would like to find someone owner of an equal bass and be shure about the state of this bass to decide how to restore it to original condition.
Many thanks for your help. cheers

Ah, yes, this is the correct HazLabs active EQ v1. There's a later version (just like on the guitars as well) with a dual concentric pot for separate bass/treble EQ. But this one in the pic above should be where the pots are now in your bass. Apparently the previous owner has removed it and put it into the second cavity for being able to restore the bass later.

I'm just not sure if the wire color codes are the same as on guitar. As I cannot read that in the pic above, could you make a list of wire color and the text which is the previous owner wrote onto the sticker? I could compare that to the guitar wiring and find out possible differences.

I'm not near the bass these days. But soon as I can I'll do it... But, just one question: So, the active EMGs work well with this active Hazlabs preamp?
Maybe the owner taked off the Haz labs and simply put on his place the pots and the battery?
thak you

Yes, exactly. The HazLabs boards are designed to work (primarily) with EMG pickups, which were the standard equipment on all Steinberger instruments. And yes, the previous owner simply replaced this board by pots. The battery is always required, with and without the HazLabs board.
