I'm not joking, Im trying to hook up with this guy to look at it up close.
As you can tell I don't know a lot about basses, even thou I play one.
I have only ever played a Rickenbacker, over the years never been able to stray from that.
I'm just reaching here but.
The S-Series did have head stocks but that was supposedly only the guitar not the bass.
And only a hand full was made.
Unless this is a Spector NS modle that Steinberg designed for Stuart Spector.

Ok, I just talked to the guy and he said the only markings on it is on the head stock and it says SPIRIT.
The lady he bought it from sayed it was a steinberger spirit. And she payed 1700. for it.
Is there any other brand names that might have a Spirit??

That is definitely not a Steinberger Spirit.....The body shape looks a little like a Tokai Talbo but that bass you're interested is not a Tokai Talbo either (huge differences in everything else but the body shape-Talbos are terrific basses btw and priced accordingly) - maybe it's a cheap Spirit Branded bass from overseas? There's so many other brands we don't even know about here, I have to say usually the quality on these unknown brands tend to be a little bit suspect, looking at it, I would be very wary.

Also Steinberger Spirit basses are pretty inexpensive to begin with, sorry but the seller has been had.

Picture below is the Tokai Talbo.

$1700 for that bass is highway robbery, he got hosed, unfortunately. If you have a price range in mind, you will get a lot of useful suggestions. IMO,the Ibanez SR series, anything 300 or up is a great value, and the thin necks would be an easy transition from a Rick. For $1700 you could get a New Rick 4003s or used 4003. Sorry if we come off snarky, welcome to TB, land of 10k opinions. There are a few Tokai Talbos for sale on EBay, seem to average in the $700 range, not a cheap junk bass by any means, but not $1700 either:

Maybe this is a custom by someone local or something?? Hard to tell without more detailed pictures. Definitely not a Steiny of any flavor.

That said, at this point it is worth whatever someone will pay for it. How does it sound/play? What is it worth to you? If I thought it was a winner I'd buy it, but without putting it in my hands first I wouldn't be able to speculate on a price. It does look interesting though...

The Amber bass has a head stock I recall seeing on a line of Aria Pro II instruments but do not recall an Aria with that body shape. The black bass is a Tokai not sure about the other bass.
There were a lot of instruments were made in various Japanese factories from the mid 70's thru early 90's and some still today under many brand names; Tokai, Aria, Daion, Greco, Electra, Washburn, Oscar Schmidt, Roland and even Fender and Epiphone

As many have already said, that is not a Steinberger spirit. They were about $450 new. You can get one around $250. I sold mine for that price.

Imo, they are decent instruments. They are made of maple wood instead of whatever the non wood material the originals were made of. I had the five string version and sold it because I didn't like the narrow string spacing. I'd consider the four string version. However since they have a very different shape, I highly encourage you to play one before getting it.
