Okay, so I've realized after buying a few different basses now that my Spirits are the most comfortable to play. Especially my XZ25 (full body not boat oar). I've decided to enhance it's sound with a pickup swap. This thread will be dedicated to this project, and I hope to begin tonight with a teardown and pictures.
This guy [Bass of the Week] Modified Steinberger Spirit XZ-25 | eBass installed Bartolini pickups and preamp in his XZ25.
Whether or not I can get it looking that nice I'm not sure. I fix cars, have never routed anything in my life lol. But I don't plan to install Soapbars anyways. I want to install some Jazz Bass pickups. Where the Bartolini pickups required widening the cavity, I'd have to fill in or make covers to hide the extra space. Maybe a little widening also if the pickups are long. Pretty sure I'm going active as well on this one, just haven't decided which ones to go with. I've been on the EMG website of course, but I'd like to hear opinions about some other brands too. On board pre amp I'm also undecided on. My Soundgear stays set. I found my sound, I don't tweak much.
Not sure which pickups the Hohner B2AV comes with, but I bought this before a B2AV came up for sale locally so I missed out on purchasing it. So why not make my own.
That's how she sounds with flats, stock pickups, and ran thru my Hartke LH1000 and Fender 4x10.
