I'm upgrading my Sterling 5 to focus on high gain, more distorted projects. I'd like to replace the stock pickups. I do have a sound in mind - I really like EMG GZR's.
Now, my knowledge on the technical aspects of pickups and humbuckers is very limited, so please bear with me here. The Sterling 5 uses humbuckers, and GZR are P/J. That obviously doesn't fit. (Even I know that).
I have a tech here who claims he can make it work. But then it struck me: in general, humbuckers are said to work better with high gain, distorted projects. (I'm not sure if it really works this way). Will I lose some of that by switching to GZR P/J?
Or maybe I should just find other similar sounding EMG humbuckers instead of the P/J combo and avoid messing with Sterling's guts? If so - which ones?
Sorry for asking possibly obvious questions, but I'm confused and willing to make an embarassment of myself than to make an uninformed decision regarding my instrument.
Thanks!
