Sterling Music Man 24CA vs Yamaha BB434

I was wondering if anyone has played both of these guitars before and has a preference? I really like the heavy hard rock sound, and the salesperson I was speaking to advised me to check out these two guitars. However trying these guitars out in a nearby store is impossible. I have to order one and hope I love it. Any review or advice would be great.

Thank you!

With no real experience with these 2 particular bass models I can say that with my experience a p bass will always be way more easy to plug and play and it will fit with anything. It has its place for a reason and it particularly good for that heavy hard rock sound with or without any pedals or EQ.

A Stingray is also iconic for a reason as well but may and often will require some EQ to get there. Partly simply due to pickup positioning. However that same pickup positioning gives it a very unique and iconic sound that can bite through really well and does particularly well keeping downtuned and heavily distorted tones clear and usable without as much mud.

I have both but do prefer the pickup positioning of a p bass over a Stingray. Everybody has their preferences.

Also Yamaha's are always a super good reliable choice regardless of price point and will usually hit well above their price point, similar to Ibanez that way. I have heard varying stories about the various models of Sterling by Music Man quality so somebody else with more experience may have more to say on that.

I have heard of some QC issues with the Sterling. I'm buying new and the salesperson is a friend and bass player, so he promised me whatever I ordered he would make sure the store had it set up great before shipping it to me.

I have owned two Yamaha guitars (1 acoustic, 1 electric) and always said they were an underrated brand.

I guess I'm hoping that between the warranty and knowing the staff personally, I shouldn't worry too much about QC or getting QC issues rresolved. They already know I had a PRS QC issue this summer and don't want that to happen again.

P basses are good. I have a set of SD Quarter Pounders in my current bass, but the bass is a cheap Squire and the neck is done.

Thanks for your input!

Go with the Yamaha (BB435 owner here). Exceptional value for money instruments - the tone, quality and overall package you are getting with the BB is crazy for the price.

Ray24ca has sexy classic Stingray iconic look especially the butter scotch color ! Once upgrade with John East 2 band preamp she sound great ( wire in parallel ). Love stingray tone from Tube rig and off cause aggressive pick playing must have !

BB434 just like any PJ bass in the market , but has very impressive build quality and construction than lot PJ bass with same price tag ! YGD P pup sound ok to me, but hate the noisy bridge pickup . I personal not favor with BB body shape, except this !!!

My favorite will be different than yours....and for different reasons.

Order them both......send the one back you don't like?
I agree with you 100%. However. sometimes a preference might be in the quality. It might be that one sounds heavier, one is more versatile (I'm assuming the Yamaha might be). Could be that someone likes the humbucker PUPs in the Stingray and why. Some key words can sometimes help understand why I might prefer one over the other. I'm going to reach out to the guy Tuesday and see what their deal is if I were to buy both and return one. I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem with it because he loves them, but the manager might feel differently having to restock
