Stripped truss rod nut (Fender Am Pro)

Hello,

I recently purchased an American Professional P bass. Lovely bass and plays great, but the person I bought it from obviously used the wrong size tool on the truss rod. I can still get it to turn, but the sides are rounded down and I'd rather replace it before it gets to the point where I can't get it out. I've attached it photo, but it's hard to tell.

My question is, do I simply use the same Fender hex Allen wrench that came with the bass to turn the nut anti-clockwise until it comes off (after removing the neck first of course)? And won't unscrewing the nut add a huge amount of relief and bend the neck? If so, do I have to do it slowly with breaks or do I just go for it?

Also, is this the right nut for the American Pro basses?

Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Thanks!

Good idea!

Without the strings on, when you remove the nut, the neck will go back to neutral

That bass has carbon fiber rods in the neck, so it's really stable.

Put a little grease on the new nut's threads before you install.

also, this is why i don't like the t-handle wrench fender provides, that ball tip is just not enough grip.

better to get (or make) a real 3/16" allen wrench with a really short "elbow", that'll be way more secure. it may in fact be all you need here, with this wrench the truss rod nut might actually be fine

no

you need the american standard bass truss rod nut, much bigger

Thanks for the tips!

Are you able to provide a link to the correct one? All I can find is the one I posted above. Even the Fender website only shows this: https://shop.fender.com/en-NL/parts...erican-standard-truss-rod-nut/0994943000.html

And it says "helps keep electric guitar and bass necks straight", so I assumed it's the same one for all Am Standard instruments.

I'd like to replace the nut first if possible, just to have a squeaky clean, brand new bass. But if I can't get hold of the right nut, I'll try your wrench idea.

Reviving this old thread to ask @bassbourne if Fender part #004-8688-000 worked for your MIA Professional P-bass. I just got a neck from a 2018 Pro P-bass and the truss rod nut is on its way out.

Neither this or this will thread onto the truss rod itself and before I try another purchase, I'd love to know if this solved your problem. Thanks!
