Suggestions for Creative Use of a Non-functional/Redundant Varitone Rotary Switch...

So...I just bought a new bass guitar online but the varitone switch seems to do absolutely nothing to the tone...

...it's not that the difference is too subtle, but rather that there's absolutely no discernible difference (to my ear) at all, between any of the settings.

For instance, if I sound and hold a note and dial the varitone switch up and down through its full range while the note is sounding, it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever to the sound: It basically has no effect on the sound.

So the problem is basically one of two things...either:

1. My perception of sound is so screwed up that I can't tell the difference between the sounds made by positions 1 and 6 on a varitone switch.

or

2. The varitone switch on my new bass is broken, has the wrong kind of resisters and/or capacitors fitted, or is just not connected.

So...my question is two-fold:

1. What kind of resistors and/or capacitors do I need to fit to the varitone switch to get it working as a varitone switch generally should work on a bass?

2. Are there other, more fun, more interesting, or more creative things I could use the switch for.

Totally open to advice and suggestions...thanks so much in advance... :)
