Well, the build off has been going for over a month. I have a bass build already in "progress" (ok, there has been no appreciable progress on that build). So, why not add another build to the mix? The one thing in my favor on both builds is that Fender-ish builds generally go fairly quickly, to that's what I'm hangin' my hat on. This needs to be wrapped up in just a few weeks so I can tackle the finishing ASAP.

This will be a build for my long-time friend, Joe (Joey). He (and Kevin from my other SBO24 build) were a part of my band back in the 80's that moved to Hollywood, CA to make it.; just like a kabillion other bands did. Joe was the youngest of us, and somehow we convinced his parents that he should drop out of high school to go with us to LA. At 20, I was much older and wiser... and of course saw this as the opportunity of a lifetime.

We played all of the hot clubs in LA and had many adventures together. We're all still close friends and get together monthly to re-tell stories from LA... and even occasionally play a few tunes in between cocktails. :D Of course, we didn't become famous at the time, but some of us did go on to successful careers in music.

I will scatter a few vintage snapshots in the builds if I can find them. :)

Alrighty, enough of the back story. This is a scratch build in the non-bass category. Here are some of the particulars as they stand right now.

  • Standard Tele shape and design
  • Figure maple neck and fretboard
  • NS frets, bone nut
  • Alder body
  • Double bound with checkboard binding
  • 2 humbuckers, but with standard Tele wiring and controls
  • Joe originally requested a lime gold finish like my Tele, but we are now leaning toward black, with purple interference pearl over the top.
  • BWB pickguard

That's enough for the opening post, I'll start progress in the next one.

I got started on this build last night. Here are few shots.

The pile o'parts shot... looks like I should have used a marker on my sign, that's tough to see.

I was able to use the new jointer to get the pieces squared up. :)

I used plastic resin glue for the joint

More soon. :)

I only had a short amount of time tonight, but I managed to get the body blank jointed and planed.

And THIS is the reason I bought a 16" jointer.

A couple of passes has this side flat. A little easier than jointing with my #7... but my hand planes aren't going anywhere. :)

Changed over for planing.

Brought the blank down to a little under 1 3/4". I'll let that sit to allow for movement before bringing it down to 1 5/8" final thickness.
