Switch to lower tension strings - can't get rid of the buzz

I usually had DR Nickel Lo Riders (45-105) on my Music Man S.U.B. and they worked just fine, my setup was not too high and not too low, I liked it. There was just a bit of buzz towards the end of the neck (after like 15th fret) but nothing serious, and nothing that would come out of the amp.

I tried a set of Dunlop Super Bright Nickels (45-105) and loved the tone and the feel, but I got some serious fret buzz coming from the A and D strings (G sting no buzz at all, even though it's the lowest height from all the strings, and E string a bit of buzz towards the end of the neck, higher frets, but a lot less than A and D). A and D started to buzz horribly at like 7th frets, and this time the buzz would go through the amp too. Loud live rock music would pretty much cover it all, but certain "quieter passages" would not go completely buzz free. I tried to raise saddles, and only the ungodly amount of height would fix it somewhat. I tried adding relief, and I tried adding some tension (admittedly, I didn't have the guts to really tighten it up). More relief didn't help, it would raise the action, add the bow, but it would still buzz. Again, as for tightening it, I didn't have the courage to tighten it more than half a turn maybe.

I think I have more than enough relief because my G saddle is very very low and I think no matter how low I set my saddles, I could never have any string rest on the fretboard without some room between the board and the string.

What kind of problem does this seem to be? Perhaps a fret job is necessary? The frets look fine to me, but you never know. Should I add more tension to the neck, little by little daily, and then start raising my saddles?

I just put back the DR strings on the bass, and they work fine. I even added a quarter turn of tension to the neck, still works fine, and it worked fine before I added some tension.

Anytime you change string brands or types you should do a pretty thorough setup. Truss rod, saddle height, intonation, all of it. Then leave the strings on for at least a week, sometimes the buzzing is simply a new-string issue.

I also recently tried some Super Brights. The buzz went away after playing them for a few days, but yeah, I had to adjust the saddle height a bit. However, I seemed to have lost some oomph in my tone. They sound pretty wimpy compared to the D'Addarios I have always used, but nothing a tone knob turny turn couldn't remedy. I love how they feel, but... We'll see...

Setting the intonation was more weird than usual. The G string saddle is closer to the tail than the D and my OCD is going a little nutso because of it.

The lower the string tension, the wider the string vibrates.

Therefore you need a combination of slightly higher action and more relief.

Theoretically, you should need to loosen the truss rod and raise the saddles slightly.

Damn, that feels like A LOT of relief in my neck then.
Isn't there less relief needed if the strings buzz higher on the neck? I have 0 buzz on the low frets side.

I should add, I had these strings on for at least 2 weeks, so the problem didn't go away on its own.

Honestly, I'm thinking of going back to D'Addarios. They were always the most consistent to me, and cheaper than DRs. Plus, they're higher tension than Super Brights, so I shouldn't have the buzz problems.

I can't imagine there being THAT much difference with the same gauges and just different brands. I mean SOME adjustment sure, but...

As for the relief, yes, you are correct that buzz on higher frets is an indication that less relief is needed.

However, i was speaking theoretically that more was needed to compensate for a wider string vibration. Its one of those cases where I'd really need to have the baas in my hands to see what's really going on.

Low action and low tension can be tricky.

I guess the difference comes from the fact that these are really quite lower tension than the DRs.. (I've also read that Dunlops are actually somewhat smaller gauge, just advertised as 45-105)
Oh well, perhaps a professional setup is what needs to be done here, even though I've always done my own setups, no problems before.

You may have had plenty relief, just needed to adjust the saddles a little higher.
