So, I think this is the right forum for this, but my band is covering stairway to heaven, not just the intro, the whole song. Now that I’m breaking it down, I noticed a weird synthyish, octave-like, bass sound in the background around 2:25 to around 4:20 when the drums come in. After 4:20 the bass bass JPJ’s usual tone. I know he plays mellotron on the intro before switching to bass, so I wanted to know where that sound comes from, the bass or some keyboard. Some advice on achieving that sound would help too, thanks!

Sorry that got long, but I couldn’t find an answer for this anywhere. Any advice would help!

Fender Rhodes, which Jones would use live on the tune to fill in all the missing guitar layers, playing lower notes with his left hand.

In concert Jones would play the recorder parts from the intro on a Mellotron, but on the original studio album recording they used actual recorders (aka flutes).

There seems to be some debate over who played those recorders; I see that Wikipedia claims Jones played them himself, but I'd swear that the liner notes of the original album release credited someone else's name for the recorder parts.

[edit: wait, no, I'm probably conflating Led Zeppelin IV with The Yes Album, where some session musician played the recorder parts on "Your Move"]

Thanks! I decided to go with a rearranged medley with the guitars that’s loosely based on it.
