Now, most of you will understand that I am a Music Man guy, a company man, completely and without shame at all. And I don't revere or worship "vintage" in any way at all. I'm old enough to remember when those pre-CBS Fenders were just 'old basses'.

But I like the look of those old P basses back when they had the Tele headstocks and funky pickguards - but I can't deal with maple boards. So when the Dirnt P was new, some years ago, I had to have one, didn't I? So I bought one. I kept it about a week. It was just another P bass sounding thing. I've been down that road before.

And now, for reasons I cannot explain, I have another one. I did it again. I knew better, but I did it again. Beaver Felton has some responsibility, surely.

So seriously, let me ask you guys a couple of questions. First, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.

No, ignore that. The real question is....what have you guys done to these things to make them better? It's not a bad bass, really, and if it were all I had, I could survive, but are these pickups (CS, they say) the end-all be-all for this bass? I want to bond with it, I really do.

Well, yeah, that would work. What about the Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounders? Would those be an upgrade or just kind of a small slide sideways?
I had the pickups on my MIM P Bass. Compared to the standard it's an upgrade for sure, but not really a major one. I don't know what kind of sound you're looking for though - more retro or more modern?
Here's a video comparing the standard P pickup to the SD Quarterpound.
