Hello! I recently got a new bass. The fender player plus jazz bass. I started to play and I noticed that whenever I played a noise came out from the frets (similar to the noise that the bass makes when tapping). I haven’t had this issue when playing my other bass (it makes a similar noise but it is way way way less noticeable). When I am playing it through my amp the sound is less noticeable but a slight tapping when I hit the strings can be heard. I tried everything, raising the action, lowering the action, playing lighter with my fretting + plucking hand, playing harder with my fretting + plucking hand. I don’t think it has anything to do with speed because even when I press down slowly or play slowly I can still hear it. I’m not sure if this is normal, but it is driving me crazy to the point when I might return the bass. I’m not sure if it’s fret buzz because it sounds different than the fret buzz I usually hear. Please help.

I've run into that a few times, it's annoying. In my cases, it was super low action on a neck with almost no relief. The strings were making contact with the upper-most frets causing a 'clack' noise. In order to keep the action uber low and the neck flat (which I wanted), I had the upper-most frets filed slightly lower than the others so they would "fall away" at the butt end. I'm not a luthier but check for proper neck relief first. Beyond that, you may need a fret leveling to clear the offending frets out of the way so the strings can vibrate freely. Or...maybe your problem is a totally different thing than mine was. Maybe post in the luthier sub forum where the experts are? Good luck.

I’ve only had that tapping, clacking noise on one bass, a Skyline 55- 02, and after trying several different set ups, strings etc. determined it was due to the nut slot being cut too low, that bass had a couple of other issues also so moved it on.
