I think it very much was the point. You are trying to present or demonstrate the sounds of chords, scales and intervals so that students can get them into their heads and ears. Such sounds cover up the overall effect of the scale or chord so the musical effect is lost. There are tutorials out there that address intonation for fretless players that are so deep in chorus that it is impossible for anyone with an untrained ear to make head or tail of. IMHO these type of things should be as dry as possible to give the student every possibility of actually hearing what is being discussed. But it's just my opinion, so YMMV
