The G&L SB-2 OEM Split Pickup Is Good. Really Good.

I had a plan to drop those into a really lightweight Yamaha a couple of months ago, but the truss rod on the Yamaha turned out to be wonky.
there was also a lot of concern from me as to whether those pickups would fit into a standard Precision style route

I'd have wired it in parallel to get more highs out of it, as they already have plenty of output.

They're also not crazy expensive:

Shame it didn't work on your Yamaha. Regarding the series/parallel I have now wired it up both ways myself just to hear the difference. I left it in parallel for now as I wanted to be able to solo the bridge, but I'm realizing that's not what an SB-2 does- it needs the 'P'. That said, I didn't lose too much of the highs in series so I may go back- it gets super growly at full throttle but still clear.

I love these pickups! I had built up a collection of them at one point and had 3 basses with them, but actually don't have a P with one right now- the output is so high that a few of my pedals don't get along with them so it didn't work so well going back and forth between these and Ric single-coil pickups (which are quite low output the way I use 'em). I do still have one- May be time to refresh one of my Ps! They are one of the few high-output passive pickups I've tried that don't seem to sacrifice anything in the frequency-range to the output. You can set them up to sound quite traditional, or total balls-out aggressive!
