I am in the process of buying a double bass. I have been playing acoustic bass guitar for a couple of years but ever since I heard a certain song I knew that I had to get a double bass.
I am wondering if anyone else has a song that once they heard it they knew the double bass was for them. This isn't about the best double bass song or the first one you learned but just the one that sold you on the idea.
Mine was Henry Texier's song Mr. Donald Cerise.
The whole album Verech is amazing but this one song blew my mind.

So much of the URB is the aesthetic. The look, along with the obvious tone do it for me. Sonically, and its so simple, but those first few notes of Ray Charles' "Georgia" and Sinatra's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" are emblematic of the warm blanket that the upright provides. The dirty, gritty tone of the "Why dont you do right" from Roger Rabbit is enough too.

No double bass in that song but here's my story.
Until some 25 years ago I played bass guitar whilst having a jealous admiration for the "real thing".
I gave up making music when live got in the way; two children, full time job.
Last year I dropped into the True Detective. And the scene in this video really grabbed me. The sad singer and her depressed lyrics. Who was she? I quickly found her on youtube and then I found so much more mostly American music, some I that I already knew and much that was new for me. And a lot with double bass. After a couple of months my wife brought up the subject of starting to play again and that triggered me to rent a double bass. A horrible thing that sounded good but played way to heavy, but I found that out after I started shopping for my own instrument.
So here I am now, 57 years old, new double bass, starting with lessons, TB account, walking the bass and playing along with my favorite music when I can. A happy man!

For me it was a slow burn. I love jazz. It got more intense when I lost a gig because I don't play upright. And it kept coming up with this one "gig booker" who I partner with to share gigs and keep our schedules full. That was the real impetus.

But if you want to have a song that really piqued my interest, it would be this entire album -- Brian Bomberg, Downright Upright. Loved the sound of his instrument and wanted to sound like him...
