The purpose of this thread is to provide Talkbass users with reliable information about suitable gig bags for the SKB Bass Safe.

I have been looking for a secure way to fly with my bass for a while now. I weighed a number of options, from a gig bag in the cabin to a flight case in checked luggage, and finally decided on the SKB Bass safe as the best way to provide both the protection I needed in order to check my bass, and the flexibility of having a gig bag to carry it around in upon arrival. But which gig bag? After scouring Talkbass and the rest of the internet for answers, I found little conclusive information, and decided to test it out myself. So I ordered a Bass Safe and a gig bag I knew would fit, SKB's own GB44. Both arrived today.

The GB44 gig bag didn't cost much, and my expectations weren't high. In spite of this, the bag was actually of reasonable quality, but with a few notable shortcomings. The outer shell is constructed from tough nylon, with a smoother nylon on the inside, and reinforcement patches in the bridge and headstock area. There are several outside pockets, ranging from a largish one that can take books or sheet music, to smaller pockets for accessories, even holders for pens and such. The bag has a carrying handle, a rear handle for vertical lifting, and two removable shoulder straps to carry it backpack-style. The padding looks to be about 20mm thick, and there is a solid-looking zipper running halfway around the bag. I had imagined that the bag would turn out to be OK as padding inside the Bass Safe, but less good for carrying about. It actually turned out to be the other way around. The GB44 fits easily inside the Bass Safe, but is too thin, which allows the bass to rattle around inside. I would not trust this bag as the only padding inside the case. There is no neck brace either, it's basically a soft bag that will do for light duty, but will not protect your bass from significant impacts. Also, the clips that attach the shoulder straps to the bag itself are plastic, and will probably not stand up to heavy or frequent use. So while the bag fits comfortably inside the Bass Safe, it's clearly not sufficiently protective for travel.

Next up was my Mono Vertigo. I hadn't expected it to fit, and it didn't. You could just about fit the top end in the Bass Safe, but the rubber boot at the bottom is too large to be able to push the two halves of the case together.

Finally, I tried the Mono Bass sleeve. This didn't fit either, as it was too broad for the case, and you couldn't fit the bottom half over it.

So there the matter stands, for now. I will report when I find a bag that works with the Bass Safe. In the meantime, feel free to add your own experiences to this thread. To aid you in finding a suitable gig bag, I'm also providing the external dimensions of the SKB bag. In order to fit inside the case, a gig bag should not exceed these dimensions. Pictures are welcome, especially if you find a bag that works.

Mono M80
I’ve read several reports that the Mono M80 fits, and today I had the chance to try it out, and it does - sort of. It really is an inch or so too long, but using brute force, it’s possible to close the case. However it involves compressing the bag lengthwise, which is both hard to do and generally inadvisable, I should think. My conclusion is that for practical purposes, the M80 does not fit.

So here is the current list:

Gig bags that fit:
SKB GB44 (does fit, but is not recommended)

Gig bags that DON’T fit:
Mono Vertigo
Mono M80
Mono Bass Sleeve

l was just going to post this same thing. I’ve heard of people fitting a Levy’s leather bag in there. Thinking of trying a CM19L or possibly a Gator Transit (neck brace is a plus). Anyone have experience with either of these? l wish SKB would’ve made the case an inch bigger all around. Would’ve been perfect.

Agreed. The Gator Transit actually looks quite promising - it's the right length, and the width is also well within the measurements I posted above. Trouble is, I simply can't find a dealer for it in my part of the world. However, I've got another promising lead, the Reunion Blues RBX. It's almost identical in size to the Gator (it's a touch longer, but probably not enough to matter), and more readily available where I live. A shoutout to @honeyiscool who owns both, and was kind enough to verify the dimensions for me.

I've also heard of some Levy's bags fitting, though I don't think it was any of the leather bags, and they do seem a bit on the long side. The CM19L I've never heard of. Who makes it?

A general observation: The gig bags I have used are 4-6 inches longer than the bass.
Although they have neck straps inside the bass can slide back & forth and usually wider
than the bass body.
It would be nice to see a gig bag that conform to the body of a specific bass.

It seems to me, having had a number of different gig bags (I currently have four), that most of them seem to be built around a P-bass. Possibly this is because the P is so ubiquitous. I can sort of understand that a gig bag manufacturer needs to make bags that fit as many basses as possible, but it does tend to mean that gig bags are on the long side. :)

Good news! Finally found a bag I trust that fits perfectly. I looked up the dimensions of the Reunion Blues Aero and it looked promising, so I gave it a shot. Fits in my SKB perfectly with no force needed to close the pieces together. I will say that my SKB doesn’t have foam in the top or bottom because I got it from the factory as a floor model, but plenty of people I know had to tear the foam out to fit their Mono M80. The RB Aero is really sturdy and solid though, I don’t think I’ll worry much about it being the only protection inside the SKB.

That's so weird. The proof is in the video :bored:
I know - I actually went out and bought one, because I'd heard reports that it did fit. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when it wasn't even close. I might get on to Mono's customer service and check whether there's been some change in the specifications. Did you have any problems closing the bass safe at all? Or was it plain sailing?

JakobT, I have one of those SKB Bass Safe cases. I've used it to fly to a couple of studio dates I had a couple of years ago. I have a Washburn Axxess 5 bass and a recent Warwick RockBag soft case to cover it with. It all fits in my SKB Bass Safe travel case. My issue with traveling by air was with the TSA here in the states, the SKB case has an approved key lock that conforms to the TSA requirements, i.e., the TSA must be able to open and inspect the contents of the case and then close it back up. On the flight to the studio, the TSA did close my SKB hardshell case back up properly. On the return flight, the TSA did NOT close the case back up properly, and it had some cheap packing tape stuck to the lock area. The TSA agent did not completely close the case back up. The case arrived on the belt in the baggage claim area partially opened, to my horror and disgust. My bass guitar was alright, but I am very afraid to try to use the SKB Bass Safe for air travel ever again.

Sorry to hear of your experience with the TSA. I live in Scandinavia, and don’t fly to the US a lot, so I don’t anticipate having the same problem too often. Still, it is a concern, and the strap closure system on the Bass Safe is certainly a little cumbersome.

However, since the Bass Safe has a gig bag inside, at least there is a second layer of protection, and as long as that remains inside the Bass Safe, even if it isn’t completely closed, the risk of any significant damage to the bass should be fairly small.

But of course, this also highlights the need for a good gig bag to put in the case, which is part of the reason I originally started this thread. In the light of your own experience, SKBs own offering is clearly inadequate, and, as we’ve seen, several of the other good bags on the market do not fit. I’m awaiting delivery of a Gator Transit next week, which I hope might be a good fit. I’ll report back as soon as it arrives.

I’ve been on to Mono about the difference in size between M80 bags. They say that there may have been small variations in product size over the years, but that the dimensions of my M80 is consistent with their current product dimensions. Most of the reports I’ve read from people who have been able to fit the M80 inside the Bass Safe are a few years old as well. It’s therefore possible that you have an M80 that was produced some time ago, even if it was bought recently. In any event, this probably means that most current M80s will NOT fit the Bass Safe, unless you’re lucky enough to find one that has been sitting on the shelf for a while. My advice to anyone contemplating an M80 for their Bass Safe would be to measure it carefully before buying.

Gator Transit
My Gator Transit arrived today, and I’m happy to report that it does indeed fit, though it is the tiniest bit of a squeeze. Still, this means the bag will not rattle around inside the bass safe, which should be a good thing. The bag is well made, too - with padding almost as good as a Mono. The only caveat is hat the clips attaching the shoulder straps to the bag are plastic, and while they seem solid enough, I’m wondering how they will stand up to hard use. However, I’m happy that I’ve finally found something that fits.

So here is the current list:

Gig bags that fit:
