This is what happens when a prog metal bass player writes a pop song just to prove a point

Hi Mr. @archisland,

That is actually really impressive. Sure, it's pop but I like the hooks and the breakdown and the instrumental interlude section. It sounds just as good, if not better, that what I'm hearing on the radio these days. My personal preference would be to have the vocals up just a little more in the mix so it's not so hard to hear the words (that's pop music for you), but overall that is very nice work. Thanks for sharing. :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Wow! Thank you for those kind words bro!! That means a lot! :)

I like it! Dead cert for Sweden's entry next year. I can't wait to hear it in the final when you have the children's choir walk on stage to do BVs for those big final choruses!

Strangely reminds me of the UK's last winning song - it's cheesy as anything but it's still a cracking pop song!

And frankly, this will never be bettered!!!

Rutger Gunnarson, what a bass player!

And yes, I agree with the others... a touch less saturation on the main rhythm guitar part, perhaps a touch more compression to smooth it out and bring up the vocals a little bit. But that's really just nit picking.

AND the children's choir on the big ending choruses...:cool::cool::cool::bassist:

PS Have you ever checked out the UK prog metal band Threshold? They've got a load of albums on InsideOut and Nuclear Blast. They are properly prog metal but also not scared of throwing in a singable big chorus and catchy hooks into their tunes where it suits.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!! :)

Yup, I’ve checked out Threshold a bit! I like them - and I like my prog catchy, whenever possible, so with that being said I should spin them on Spotify a bit more I guess :)

Also: Investigating how to include a Children’s Choir for my next project. Feels a bit out of budget for the time being, but I’ll figure something out.

The lyrics are funny. Well done.
-When I think "pop" in the modern sense I think about lots of automation and post production. This track is more like light metal/hard rock, in that it could be performed live very close to the recording. I don't know anything about eurovision song contest, but if you really want to get a track on it, I think maybe consider that the songs that won are like one big album, then try to write the next song for that imaginary album.
All good advice in above comments.
Keep us updated if you revise the track. I always enjoy hearing the "time-lapse" of song development.

Yeah, it turned out fairly more "rockier" than most contributions to the ESC. My aim is not to be on there - just wanted to challenge myself with writing a more "pop" oriented track. I'll definitely challenge myself like this in the future - but maybe go the "extra mile" then and go full on pop even in terms of production (I.E. less guitars, more synths and easier drum beats) :)

Well, you can always write in different genres for different musicians. Just like musicians that play covers, you can write the songs that others cover too. I think your song is good, even if you don't prefer to write pop, it turned out well IMO.
I always upload my music stems, and I get some pretty cool remixes and reinterpretations that way. I mostly write rock and pop, but most remixes that others make from them are dance music. It's fun to let go of a song creatively and see what people do with it.

This is what happens when I write a pop song, just to prove a point regarding my cranky-old-man-opinion of the Eurovision Song Contest. Hope ya'll enjoy it (Skip to 01:02 to hear the song instead of me ranting)

That vocalist looks far too metal to have such a sweet voice.

Good work!

You could always go full Lordi! LOL LOL LOL! I watched the year they represented Finland just to see what happened!

Thought it wasn’t pretty cool and I’ve heard a lot of your other stuff on YouTube over the last couple years. You great tones.

Having gone from a nu metal band to a prog metal band back to the nu metal band myself I have to say I honestly enjoy writing the simple stuff. It sounds huge in PA systems at shows, attracts more people to shows, and to be honest I got to a point where I felt like I was playing more complicated music for the sake of playing more complicated music. On our most recent album I challenged myself in several different ways. One was to make my bass lines simple but still fun to perform. Another was to be more of a multi instrumentalist and producer (I did all the keyboard/virtual instruments work and was much more into helping with vocal ideas.

Here are some of songs off our newest record.

This one is kind of like a Staind or Seether Like ballad you can here some of the strings and piano work i did. As simple as it is I’m proud of the bassline on this one also.

This one you can hear a little bit of My more progressive influences but it’s also a very simple rock chorus and bridge.

This one is very Taproot/nu metal. more balls to the wall
