My right hand thumb has the texture of a mill file and, with time & use, can easily erode the top surface of any oil-finished bass. To complicate matters, I'm now dealing with "trigger thumb" and have to stay splinted 24 / 7...I'm taping, it's not really a splint. I have a couple of ideas but I'd like some additional guidance.

So floating thumb is out of the question?

The clear mylar sheets work great for flamenco tap plates. The adhesive releases with naphtha if memory serves. Should serve you well.

When your thumb heals remove, oil, and wax.

I'm working on it but old habits die hard. I keep the thumb wrapped with trainer's tape in a Mark King fashion as a full-blown splint is out of the question. I figure it will get better in 6 months or just fall off in which case it becomes a non-issue.

A piece of clear, self-adhesive pickguard material over the impacted area?

Follow-up...

This stuff works like a charm. I was able to measure out, razor out, and install two plates in 30". Virtually undetectable unless viewed closely or at an angle...the mylar is shiny. I can see positioning a piece on the treble-side for those who slap & pop....and the material is intended for flamenco-style finger picking, so there ya go!

Both basses required less than 1/8 of a sheet so I've got plenty to spare. If you'd like a workable sample, just PM me with approx. size and I'll stick it in the mail. Sorry, can't (won't) spare a whole sheet if you need to fabricate a full-size scratch guard.

Then I think I know the problem....
