Disclaimer: my background is jazz and I’m relatively new to orchestral playing.
I’m working on Tchaikovsky’s 5th symphony and I’ve discovered my time management is not efficient. I’ll start on a new movement, find something that is challenging and get hung up on it to the point that I burn out before getting to the end of the movement. I’ll realize that an hour has gone by and I only have the time (or energy) for two. Then I get to rehearsal and I’m sight reading the parts I didn’t get to. Coming from a jazz background, I rarely had several pages of score to learn, even when working on original material from my jazz school colleagues. So it seems obvious to me now that a sensible approach would be to read through the whole piece and mark any parts that I can’t play through immediately and then go back and focus on those tricky bits (and most scores have some simple parts that don’t require much attention). So, begging your pardon for indulging me in what seems like a simple solution to this problem, how do you folks maximize your practice time so you cover the most material?
