I have a BX500 which puts out 500w into 4 ohms. I'm getting a Schroeder 1210pl. If I run a Tonehammer pedal through the FX return should I

A. Get 500w into the Schroeder

And

B. Should it pretty much sound like a Tonehammer TH500 through the Schroeder

Thanks!

If your cab is 4 ohms, then your amp should deliver 500 watts.

It will not sound exactly like a Tone Hammer, as you won't have the power section from a Tone Hammer.
Agree. I used to run a TH pedal with a Peavey IPR power amp. Switched to a TH 500 and it does sound different - drive knob nonwithstanding. IMO, there's some special mojo that the TH power section has going for it.

That being said, I would bet that Pedal/BX 500 amp combination would sound great.

And expanding on that, I also have a Carvin BX500 which is a backup/secondary to my Mesa Subway D800. I also have the Subway DI pedal which is similar in principal to the Tone Hammer...essentially the front end of the amp. But the Subway DI into the Carvin does not sound like the Mesa amp, as the Mesa has some special mojo going on with the power section. The Carvin seems to be a more straightforward amp with the stock power modules as is. I will say that running the Subway DI into the front of the Carvin sounds waaaay better than running it into the effects loop. One tip...with everything flat on the Carvin it sounds very boxy and nasaly. If you dial the contour knob to about 3 o'clock it sounds more like a 'normal' amp.

I have not tried a preamp pedal yet, but have used a Pork Loin in front of my BX1600 pre. I also think that's where your preamp pedal is going to shine. Before adding the preamp pedal, try diming the drive with tube engaged, and get a higher signal out of the pre with other knobs while running the master lower. That works with the 1500/1600 to get quite a nice grind. Your amp is lacking the channel level controls the 1500/1600 have located under the master, but electrically before the amp. That's part of the equation, but you might get there by sliding all the graphic eq's all the way up. You might get pretty loud with the master at 1. I run mine lower than that for the sake of my dogs. BTW: I am pretty sure the graphic EQ is post fx loop, so as you experiment, keep that in mind. You can mid scoop or whatever with the graphic if you want to try the loop. Pork Loin sounds very good into the 1600's preamp and the pre responds very well to being overdriven with a hot input... up to a point and that would vary by personal tastes. I'll also vote you can get a great sound with what you have planned. You'll have versatility out the yin yang. Versatility is sort of a double edged sword tho., it can take time to get what you want out of it.

IDK Schroeder except that quite a few like them. If they have a baked in tone, that can be hard to eq away if it's not the tone you want. Do you already have the TH pedal?

Hope it works out for you. Color me inn'er'stid :D
