Does anyone know where I could find free software I could use to transpose pieces down a whole step for solo tuning? I've been trying to play more pieces for other instruments.

If you mean notation software, I am a big fan and user of Musescore. Free music composition and notation software | MuseScore . Once the score is entered, transposition is easy peasy.
I also use MuseScore, which is free and open source, so its reasonably well maintained. The user interface takes a bit of training but there are many training videos and texts.
Also, their web site will attempt to convert PDF's to formats common to MuseScore as well as other software products. The conversion only works occasionally but worth a try to avoid manual entry of the parts.
